When the Greater Hickory area was turned into frozen tundra over the weekend, many people were content to sled or build snowmen.
Not the Rutter family. They built an igloo in the backyard. And stayed there Sunday night.
Well, dad Kevin Rutter and daughter Kayla actually made like Eskimos. Son Bryce is a little too young, and mom Stephanie stayed with him. Indoors.
"We had a lot of fun!" Kevin Rutter said. "It was cold, but not as bad as people think. I would recommend a good air mattress. Ours had a hole in it, so we ended up using pillows as padding."
It's not the first time Rutter spent the night in an igloo.
"I did this when I was 16 years old in Hendersonville. It was quite warm then. But this time, things were much colder. I believe it was because we were using blankets then, and this time we had sleeping bags. This traps in the humidity and makes things cooler, I hear.
"I wanted my 7-year-old daughter to have a great memory of doing something not too many kids get a chance to do.
"Like her dad, she is a daredevil and loves to take adventures. Seeing her excitement was the best part. Our whole family pitched in and built it.
"It was a great family bonding experience."
The Eskimo inn was still standing as of Wednesday, just in case snowdad and snowdaughter want to experience the Arctic outdoors again.
