Unemployment rates in all four Greater Hickory Metro counties rose above 10 percent in December.
Catawba County's unemployment rate reached 10.7 percent in December, the highest it has been in more than 25 years.
The N.C. Employment Security Commission reported today that unemployment rates increased in 97 of the state's 100 counties in December.
Statewide, the unadjusted unemployment rate in December was 8.5 percent, up from an adjusted 7.8 percent in November.
The December jobless rate for the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metropolitan statistical area was 10.9 percent, up from 10.2 percent in November. Among North Carolina's 14 metropolitan areas, only Rocky Mount, at 11.7 percent, was hit harder by layoffs.
Catawba County's December rate of 10.7 percent was up from 9.7 percent in November.
Other county jobless rates in the region in December were Alexander, 10.4 percent, up from 9.8 percent in November; Burke, 11.7 percent, up from 10.7 percent in November; and Caldwell, 10.7 percent, up from 10.6 percent in November.
