Juicy hamburgers, cool lemonade, and explosive fireworks — are all classic elements of Fourth of July celebrations taking place in back yards across the nation Saturday.

But while these Independence Day events can create some of the fondest memories all year, they can also create unpleasant ones.

About 9,800 people in the United States suffered fireworks-related injuries in 2007, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Though bottle rockets and other airborne varieties caused some injuries, sparklers and fountains, typically considered safe options for fireworks shows at home, were the cause of 25 percent of fireworks-related injuries that year.

With these helpful tips from the Hickory Fire Department, though, you can ensure that your July Fourth celebration will be both fun and injury-free.

Cookout safety tips:

Stay with the cookout. Never leave the grill unattended and make sure you watch your children and pets.

Watch where you dump your ashes. Wet them and stir them to prevent a brush fire.

Stay aware of weather conditions. Thunderstorms can pop up unexpectedly.
