Baseball and fireworks
When: The Crawdads game starts at 7 tonight. Fireworks start when the game is finished, probably between 9:45 and 10 p.m.
Where: LP Frans Stadium, 2500 Clement Blvd., NW, Hickory
Why go: The great American pastime finishes with a bang. It's the only fireworks show in town. Plus, when the pyrotechnics are over, the stadium will have launch-a-ball competitions and let kids run the bases, as well as showing a movie on the scoreboard.
Freedom Fest
When: 6 tonight until neighboring fireworks are over
Where: Resurrection International Church, 2010 Clement Blvd. N.W., Hickory (right beside the Crawdads Stadium)
Cost: $2 for parking
Why go: The popcorn, water, balloons and inflatables to keep the kids occupied are free. You also can catch the fireworks from here.
Red, White and Bluegrass Festival
When: Bluegrass bands start at 2 p.m. today and last until fireworks begin at 10 p.m.
Where: Catawba Meadows Park, 701 Sanford Drive, Morganton
Cost: $15 for the day of music and fireworks
Why go: Expect 25 to 30 minutes of fireworks. And that's after a full day of bluegrass, including Cherryholmes and The Dan Tyminski Band.
Kool Park Pool
Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day through Labor Day
Where: 3170 31st Ave. Court, NE, Hickory
Cost: $12 for swimmers ages 13 and older, $8 for children 12 and younger and seniors ages 60 and older and free for children younger than 3
Why go: Test the waters at Hickory's landmark pool. It's got a 90-foot waterslide, 3 to 15-foot diving boards and all the swimming you need to stay cool this holiday.
Author, pilot visits Aviation museum
When: 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday
Where: Hickory Aviation Museum, at Hickory Regional Airport, 3101 Ninth Ave. Drive, NW
Cost: Free
Why go: Attention airplane buffs! And war historians. And anyone who loves a great story. Kenny Wayne Fields, author of "The Rescue of Streetcar 304 — A Navy Pilot's 40 Hours on the Run in Laos," will sign books and answer questions.
