Newton-Conover City Schools will save money this year with new contracts for milk and bread for the child nutrition department.
Vickie Rowe, director of child nutrition for the school system, said she had to decide whether she wanted to roll over last year's bids for the milk and bread contracts, or rebid them.
"Last year, gas prices were skyrocketing and prices in general were soaring," Rowe said. "I went out on a limb and decided to rebid them."
The results came back in Newton-Conover City Schools' favor, with the bids much lower than they were last year for milk.
"Last year, it cost us between 27 cents and 28 cents a carton for milk," Rowe said. "This year, it will cost between 17 cents and 18 cents a carton."
She said if students drink the same amount of milk this year as they did last year, it will save the school system thousands of dollars at the end of the 2009-10 school year, compared to last year.
The school system's board of education unanimously approved the milk contract of $83,483.29 to Land of Sun Dairies/Pet Dairy.
The contractor for the 2008-09 school year was Mayola. Rowe said the company submitted a bid for the upcoming school year, but it was after the cut-off period.
The board also approved a new bread contract to Sara Lee Bakery Group for $21,901.20 for the 2009-10 school year. Rowe said this would save Newton-Conover City Schools about $200 compared to the 2008-09 school year.
"It's not as great a savings, but we'll take anything," Rowe said.
