When golf fans attend the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn this fall, they'll have tickets with a drawing of a smiling golfer on them.
Kaley Price, a third-grader at Lyle Creek Elementary School, drew one of the winning pictures that will be used on tickets for the PGA Champions Tour Sept. 14 through 20. She received the news Monday at the school's awards ceremony.
"I didn't think I'd win," Price said. "I looked at some pictures on the computer and decided what to draw."
The picture, which was drawn on 8.5-by-11 inch paper, was colored with crayon and outlined in marker, Price said. It is of a man with long legs, teeing up on the green, holding his driver.
"The judges really liked the colors in the picture," said Sara Waugh, coordinator for the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn Golf & Spa Presented by Kia Motors. "It stood out from the others."
There were more than 350 entries into the art contest, which was open to third- through fifth-graders only. Ten percent of those entries came from Lyle Creek alone, said Pete Fischer, tournament manager, although the contest was open to students in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties.
Price's mother, Monica Williams, said Price knew exactly what she wanted to draw and needed no guidance from her.
"She loves to draw," Williams said. "She came home with an idea, and knew exactly what she wanted to do."
Price's picture, along with another winning picture that will be announced today, will appear on the Tuesday through Sunday passes for the tournament, Waugh said.
For winning the contest, Price will receive a $100 savings bond and have her photo taken with the tournament champion on the 18th green. Lyle Creek Elementary also receives a $500 donation from the Greater Hickory Classic, which can be used however the school wants, Fischer said. The art teacher receives $100 for school supplies.
The winner at another elementary school will receive the same prize.
