A truck was totaled when it caught fire early Tuesday, but the bay where it was parked was spared major damage.
Conover Fire Station 15, with Newton Fire Station 19 assisting, responded to Zenith Freight Lines LLC on Dehart Motor Terminal Road, SW, after receiving a report of a structure fire at the company around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Upon arrival, firefighters noticed a vehicle engulfed in flames outside one of the company's bays.
Zenith employees had pulled the vehicle — the cab of a tractor-trailer — out of the bay. Firefighters also saw smoke coming from the bay, but it sustained only smoke damage, according to Conover Fire Chief Mark Hinson.
"There was some smoke damage to the bay where the truck was, but it was minimal," Hinson said. "The truck was a total loss."
Hinson said the truck was an old one with more than 1 million miles on it. The company was getting ready to retire it, and an investigation into the cause of the fire was not considered necessary, Hinson said.
Firefighters were on the scene for 30 to 40 minutes, after getting the truck fire under control in about 20 minutes.
In addition to Conover and Newton firefighters, Newton-Conover Rescue and Catawba County Emergency Services were on the scene.
