A single-vehicle crash in the 2300 block of Old Conover-Startown Road claimed the life of a Newton man Saturday night.

John Matthew Plunkett, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from his 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. According to the Newton Police Department, Plunkett was traveling southwest on Old Conover Startown Road when he ran off the right side of the road. He then overcorrected, crossing the centerline and running off the left side of the road and hitting a culvert. The truck rolled several times before coming to rest. Plunkett was ejected from the truck.

"The truck had turned over two to three times and was on its roof. There was a toolbox on the back of the truck and tools were spilled out," said Lt. Mark Beal, of the Newton Police Department.

Other agencies on the scene were the Newton Fire Department, the Newton-Conover Rescue Squad and Catawba County Emergency Medical Services.
