More than 40 top high school sailors from five states will compete in the 2009 SAISA Spring Intersectional Regatta hosted by the Lake Norman Yacht Club on March 21-22.
The regatta kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Each school team will have two to four members. The Silver Regatta is organized by the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA), one of seven districts in the U.S. devoted to promoting high school and college sailing.
Accomplished teams qualified to race in the Intersectional Regatta based on their performance in the 2008-09 high school sailing season that started in September. The winner will advance to ISSA's 11th annual Great Oaks Invitational Regatta in New Orleans later this year.
The Lake Norman High School Sailing team will not participate in this regatta this year. Six students from LNHS will sail the Gold Regatta in Georgia on March 28-29, where they hope to beat out 15 other teams for a spot in the district championships next month in Florida.
The LNYC alternates each year between hosting the Intersectional and Gold regattas.
More than 40 boats will also compete in the One Design Keelboat Midwinters Regatta this weekend at the LNYC. The event starts at 10:25 a.m.
The free sailing events are open to the public.
