To add to the drama of their upcoming production of Titanic – the musical, the Hickory Community Theatre is posing this question; and, offering businesses and private citizens the opportunity to, figuratively, rescue more people from the doomed ocean liner by sponsoring lifeboats and filling seats on them.
On April 14, 1912 the Titanic sank beneath the waves of the North Atlantic, taking the lives of 1522 passengers and crew members. Although one reason for this was that the ship did not have sufficient lifeboats to accommodate everyone on board, most of the boats left unfilled and many more people could have been saved.
The total lifeboat capacity onboard was 1,228 persons yet only 705 were saved. There were sixteen wooden lifeboats with a capacity of 65 persons and four collapsible boats that could hold up to 47. Only one lifeboat left the ship with more than 40 people on board and only a handful went back to pick up more survivors.
Can Hickory do better?
A boat sponsorship is $250 for one of 16 standard boats or $175 for one of four collapsible ones.
Individual seats on the boats may be filled for a donation of $10 each or $30 for four.
Artistic representations of the boats will be displayed on the theatre walls naming their sponsors and filled with individual circles listing the names of the seat sponsors.
To sponsor a boat or seats on a boat, please contact John Rambo, HCT managing Director at (828) 327-3855 or email john@hct.org.
HCT is a Funded Affiliate of the United Arts Council of Catawba County. The production of
Titanic – the musical is produced by Embarq and Corning Cable Systems.
