More wastewater service planned

The Hickory-Catawba Wastewater Treatment Plant will be expanded and upgraded so it can provide service to every customer along the N.C. 150 corridor and other areas of the southeastern portion of Catawba County.

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners on Monday approved its portion of the funding for the project, which is estimated to cost $8,060,000. Catawba County will pay 50 percent of the cost, and Hickory will pay the other 50 percent, said Jack Chandler, assistant director for the Catawba County Department of Utilities and Engineering.

"It's needed, because without it, we won't be able to provide the necessary treatment along N.C. 150," Chandler said.

The commissioners and Hickory entered into an agreement in 2003, which was amended in 2006. The contract calls for an engineer to design the expansion, after which the two partners would decide whether to move forward. The design is completed, and the permitting process will be complete in the next 60 days, Chandler said.

When the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant is finished, it will be able to treat 750,000 gallons of water per day, Chandler said.

Catawba County will finance its portion of the cost — $4,030,000 — at 4.5 percent for 20 years, Chandler said.

"We anticipate the bidding in December and will award the bid in January," he said. "We hope the construction will begin in the spring."

Construction should be completed in 24 months, Chandler said.
