Top vote-getters win spot on Newton council

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A crowded field of eight candidates went head-to-head in an effort to claim one of the three seats available on the Newton City Council during this year's election. The top three vote-getters won a spot on the council.

The top vote-getter was Bill Lutz with 753 votes, followed by Robert C. Abernethy Jr. with 580 votes and incumbent and Mayor Pro-tem Anne Petree Stedman, all of whom rounded out the top three candidates.

Lutz credited his success in his first campaign for public office to his staff and their hard work.

"I had some good people working for me," he said.

Lutz said he's relieved to have the election behind him and eager to get to work on the business of governance, but before that happens he's going to go out and take down his signs.

He laughed and said he's tired of seeing them all over town.

Stedman said she's glad to be able to relax and know the race is behind her.

She said with a field of eight candidates vying for three seats, it was anybody's ballgame and she's looking forward to getting to work alongside her new fellow councilmen.

Robert Abernathy was unavailable for comment.

The remaining five candidates: Bob Benson, Tom Dixon, K.C. Hartman, Anthony M. Johnson and David LeFevers will have to wait until the next election to make another run for a seat on the town council.

Incumbents Roy Johnson and Al Gaither's terms expired this year, but neither chose to file for re-election.
