Riverbend Park was closed Thursday because Duke Energy opened the floodgates at Oxford Dam after about four inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours.

For safety reasons, county policy is that Riverbend Park, located off N.C. 16 North at the Catawba River in Catawba County, is closed when the floodgates are open at the dam, county spokesman Dave Hardin said in a press release.

Catawba County Parks staff members are hopeful Riverbend Park will reopen today, he said.
