Susan Clark Mackie, an elementary school teacher at Granite Falls Elementary School, was arrested by Hickory police and charged with driving while impaired and hit and run with property damage.

Mackie, 55, of Granite Falls was arrested after she drove her 2007 Honda CRV into a car while making a left turn from Eighth Street Dr. SE onto the westbound on ramp of Interstate 40, according to the accident report.

The collision happened at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Mackie continued on the Interstate 40 on ramp followed by a witness in another car who called the police and reported the hit and run. The driver stayed in contact with the police until officers located and stopped Mackie at the 100 block of 12th Street SW, according to the report.

Mackie said she knew she'd been in an accident but, "could not explain why she did not stop at the scene of the accident," the report states.

The collision caused approximately $1,500 in damage to both vehicles.

Mackie teaches in the Exceptional Children's Program at Granite Falls Elementary School, according to the school's Web site.
