A Statesville resident has been arrested in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a cable television employee early Tuesday morning.
Hank Pittman Jr., 61, was working on a cable television line when he was struck by a vehicle that kept going.
Early Wednesday morning, authorities arrested Donna Smith Farmer, 34, in Pittman's death.
Investigators acted on a tip received by the Highway Patrol shortly before midnight Tuesday. Troopers said Farmer was arrested shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The Highway Patrol seized Farmer's 1999 Saturn. The car was taken to the Highway Patrol garage in Newton.
Farmer was transported to the Alexander County jail and charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Pittman had called his employer, Terra Design Inc., about 2 a.m. Tuesday to report he had finished his assignment on Old Mountain Road, troopers said.
Shortly before 3 a.m., a passing motorist called 911 to report a man lying in the road.
Pittman, from North Wilkesboro, was taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he later died.
Troopers alerted the public, saying they thought the vehicle was traveling toward Iredell County. The hit and run occurred near Smith Farms Road.
The tip was a result of the plea for help, troopers said.
