THUMBS UP to the extraordinary support given to victims of disease and violence. Many groups of all ages raise money for medical research and awareness of diseases such as cancer. Others make sure we remember the plight of children in abusive homes and that some die from abuse.

Right here in our area, people of all ages lend their efforts and give their money so others may live. They won't let us forget that many people live in fear.

• The volleyball team at Arndt Middle School wore special uniforms calling attention to childhood cancer.

• Hickory High School visual arts students design T-shirts in memory of children who died from domestic violence. A vigil in Newton on Tuesday will honor the victims.

• Brett's Ride for Rhabdo is today, beginning and ending at the Hickory Foundation YMCA. The event raises money for cancer research in memory of Brett Gosnell of Hickory who died from rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer.

• The annual N.C. Foothills Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is 17 at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Events, including a one-mile fun walk and a 5K run/walk, promotes awareness of breast cancer and raises money for research. Also, 10 percent of all sales at Texas Roadhouse in Hickory on Monday evening will be donated to the Foothill affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

• Have a Heart, Give a Part is a program initiated by the Clemmons Rotary Club, but is receiving accolades from Rotary clubs throughout North Carolina. The program was outlined at Hickory Rotary this week, and Shull Trucking of Hickory was recognized for providing one of its big rigs to promote organ donation.

These are just a few of the efforts undertaken to improve the lives of children and adults. Anyone can be a victim of disease or violence, and the more we know, the more we can do to benefit everyone.

Hundreds of area residents are involved in awareness campaigns and fundraising for research and assistance. Their dedication and caring demonstrates the spirit and heart of our community.
