Teens face more charges

Two teens were arrested Friday on multiple charges for a string of breaking-and-enterings into area businesses that occurred in one night.

Two thieves used a baseball bat to knock the glass out at the Whistle Stop on Emmanuel Church Road in Conover late on Sept. 24, said Chief Deputy Coy Reid with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office. An alarm sounded and scared the thieves off, but not before they were caught on surveillance camera, Reid said.

A few hours later, early on Sept. 25, the thieves broke into the Citgo Food Mart on N.C. 16 South in Newton, smashing the window to get in, Reid said. The store's alarm scared the robbers off and they didn't go inside.

They went instead to the Country Market on N.C. 10 and knocked out the glass in the front door. The thieves stole cigars, wrapping papers and six packs of Newport cigarettes, Reid said. Although the Country Market had a surveillance camera, it wasn't working that night.

Reid said the sheriff's office has been able to tie the three break-ins together through investigation.

Christian Eugene Goss, 17, of Claremont, and Dakota Lee Carl Spicer, 17, of Vale, were arrested and each charged with three counts of felony conspiracy, two felony counts of attempted breaking and entering and one felony count of breaking and entering and larceny relating to the break-ins.

The pair was arrested earlier this month in connection to a robbery at a convenience store in June that involved putting a knife to the clerk's throat, binding her hands and feet with duct tape and stealing the clerk's car and items from the store. Both were charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping in that case.

Reid said at the time that the June robbery was part of a gang initiation. Goss is a member of the Claremont-based Cat Town Boys, Reid said.

"Goss is a confirmed Cat Town boy, and the other is attempting to get in," Reid said. "Whether they did this as part of the gang, though, I don't know."

Goss and Spicer were each placed in the Catawba County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
