A Hickory man died Saturday when he drove off the road, hitting a tree.

Ryan Evan Parker, 39, was driving west on U.S. 70, SE, at about 12:45 p.m. when he drove past the 1200 block and ran off the road into an empty lot next to the Armstrong Ford dealership, according to police reports. His Ford Ranger pickup truck struck a tree.

Parker was driving between 50 and 60 mph at the time, said Maj. Clyde Deal, with the Hickory Police Department. The speed limit is 50 mph on that part of U.S. 70.

Parker was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police reports.

The investigation into Parker's death is continuing. Deal said police suspect alcohol was involved.

Police are waiting for the results of his autopsy and toxicology results, Deal said.
