Safe driving a matter of trust

Our Voice

There have been many painful stories in the Record in recent days. Too many.

The loss of loved ones from car and motorcycle crashes and hit and run tragedies have put families and friends through indescribable agony.

In some cases, excessive speed was involved. Others are being investigated to see if impaired driving or carelessness were contributing factors.

The fact remains that all the deaths could have been avoided.

We do not seek to arrogantly sermonize while the victims are mourned. We offer our condolences and hope the survivors find peace, comfort and strength. We know how difficult it is to cope with tragedy and anguish.

We are compelled, however, to remind everyone — young and old — that driving a motor vehicle is serious business. We can't afford to be distracted or exceed the limits of our ability to control the vehicle we are entrusted to safely navigate our streets and highways.

It is a matter of trust. Our driver's license is certification that we know how to drive safely.

Often, we are not as careful and thoughtful as we should be, and the cost is horrible.

We ask that all drivers look within themselves and commit to safer driving. Tragedy can strike in the blink of an eye. We will make mistakes behind the wheel, but we should not increase the risk by speeding, drinking or being deliberately careless.

For those who mourn, we pray Heaven's grace surrounds them.

All of us should endeavor to do our best and hold to the commitment that these tragedies will not happen again, that we will not inflict pain upon ourselves or others.

Drive safely. Please.
