The man who drove his car into a house in Newton died early Wednesday morning.
Mines Cauthen Jr., 45, was driving south on North Ashe Avenue on Tuesday afternoon when he crossed the center line, drove over the curb and crashed into a home, according to police reports.
Cauthen was driving between 25 and 30 mph before the wreck, and it didn't look as though he applied his breaks, according to Newton Police Officer B.D. Bixby.
Cauthen was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown partially through his windshield. He was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Cauthen was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte on Tuesday evening, according to police reports. He died in the early morning hours Wednesday.
Police believe Cauthen, who lived in Newton, had been drinking prior to the crash. Police are awaiting toxicology results. A full flask of alcohol was found at the scene of the wreck, said Sgt. Brad Hendren with the Newton Police Department.
