Anyone with a hankering for woodworking demos, new woodshop equipment or a free apple is invited to attend the ninth annual Klingspor's Woodworking Shop Extravaganza, said Klingspor's Woodworking Shop General Manager Coleman M. Fourshee Sr.
The Extravaganza will be held today and Saturday at the Hickory Metro Convention Center. It's open to the public and admission and parking are free.
The event appeals to woodworkers with a wide range of skills. Fourshee said one of his main goals is to find new woodworkers and introduce them to the hobby.
He said the extravaganza is a friendly, low-pressure event, and he gives away locally grown apples to highlight one of the region's most well known treats and add to the relaxed atmosphere.
The event will take over the 30,000-square-foot exhibition hall and fill it with woodworking clubs, demonstrations and vendors.
Pumpkin carvers, bowl makers and champion wood carvers are scheduled to show off their skills as they give demonstrations throughout the event.
Ten mini-lathes will be arranged to give novice wood turners a taste of the craft over the span of the two-day event. Experts will be on hand to help adults and youths create spinning tops, bottle stoppers, honey dippers and pens, Fourshee said.
Three nonprofit woodworking clubs will have hundreds of their carvings on display for their contest.
A $1,600 table saw will be the event's door prize, and multiple clubs will be holding raffles.
