Longtime Conover police chief retires

Conover Police Chief Gary Lafone's 37-year law enforcement career has come to an end. He's decided to retire, and Friday is his last day.

Lafone won't spend his retirement on a golf course — he'll spend it on a battlefield.

Lafone said he never picked up the game of golf, but he is a Civil War buff and he's decided to do some traveling. Gettysburg, Pa., is the first destination on his list.

On the way home, he and his wife will stop off in Washington, D.C., where he plans to spend three days — or maybe four or five. He said he'll just see how it goes. He probably won't wear a watch.

Lafone's career began when he joined the Catawba County Sheriff's Office in 1972.

In 1984, he joined the Conover Police Department and became chief in 1996.

He will be succeeded by Conover police Capt. Steve Brewer who will serve as interim chief until the Conover City Council names a permanent chief.
