to Minnie Bell Starnes and Carl Zwingli, who prove beyond all doubt that there is a lot to live for. Starnes will turn 100 next month. The delightful lady has a hundred stories to tell and does so with gusto and a wonderful sense of humor. Zwingli is closing in on 84. He walks a lot. In fact, he walked more than 1,600 miles in less than a year. That's in addition to hikes and other travels. He has a finely-tuned sense of humor also. Starnes and Zwingli meet life head-on and enjoy every moment. They know how to laugh. They have fun. They are inspirations to all of us.
THUMBS UP to an ingenious way to make money for new band uniforms. The old uniforms at St. Stephens High School are being turned into commemorative pillows. It's the idea of the St. Stephens band boosters. The band is growing by leaps and bounds, so there aren't enough uniforms to go around. New uniforms are expensive. Thus, the unique fundraising idea. This is a great way to preserve the band's heritage and spread around the tradition to many people. Remember the old saying about necessity and invention. It's alive and well at St. Stephens High.
THUMBS DOWN on drivers who relentlessly, wantonly speed, and THUMBS UP to the officers who catch them. We have speed limits for safety reasons. Choosing to ignore speed limits is most often a deliberate risk. We're not talking about emergencies. It's the people who drive too fast because they think speed limits don't apply to them or they can avoid getting caught. Operation Slow Down/No Need 2 Speed proved 16,000 speeders were wrong. That's the number of speeders who were caught between March 29 and April 4. In all, officers issued 61,766 traffic and criminal citations in the five-day period. There were 3,990 safety belt and 637 child passenger safety violations and 907 drug charges. Officers apprehended 379 fugitives and recovered 42 stolen vehicles. We give Highway Patrol officers, police officers and deputies our congratulations. Good work.
