Catawba County Schools' Board of Education unanimously voted to release Superintendent Tim Markley one month early from his contract.
Markley announced last month that he would be leaving Catawba County Schools for a position as New Hanover County Schools' superintendent. His contract with Catawba County Schools requires him to give 90 days notice before he can leave.
In his resignation letter to the board, which was read aloud at the board's meeting Monday night, Markley asked if he could give 60 days' notice and have his last day be Sept. 30, rather than Oct. 30.
Markley announced at the meeting he planned to take the last few days of the month as annual leave time.
"I'll need to take care of housing issues," he said. "It will be more like three-and-a-half weeks."
The school board also unanimously approved Markley's $5,000 performance bonus. If the superintendent meets all of his goals he will receive a $5,000 annual performance bonus, according to the superintendent contract.
In other matters, the school board also approved a contract to work with the N.C. School Board Association to conduct a nationwide search for Markley's replacement. The School Board Association helped Catawba County Schools find its last two superintendents, as well as find Hickory Public Schools' current superintendent, Lillie Cox.
The N.C. School Board Association will post advertisements, compile resumes and gather surveys from staff and the community, among other things. The school system will pay them a $9,500 flat fee. Additional money will be paid for travel for superintendent candidates and advertising the position, although the majority of the advertising will be free online, said Allison Schafer, with the School Board Association.
The school board will post the position on Sept. 7, and will accept applications through Nov. 22. Preliminary interviews will likely be conducted in late January through early February, so new school board members can be involved in the process. Final interviews will be conducted at the end of February. The board hopes to announce the new superintendent at the beginning of March.
