The city of Newton is one step closer to getting its downtown district on the National Register of Historical Places.
The city council on Tuesday night approved a contract with Acme Preservation Services for $8,863.79. Acme will prepare and submit an application to the N.C. State Historic Preservation Office and prepare a nomination for the National Register of Historical Places.
Some of the work the group will do includes photos, background research, brief history and identify historic properties.
The money for the services will come from leftover economic development incentives already in the city’s coffers.
The council also agreed to lease space on the city water tank to New Cingular Wireless for a cellular antenna. The 10-year lease on the tank, located at 201 West 4th St., would net the city $421,000, according to information from the city.
Before voting on the agreement, Council Member Robert Abernethy said he thinks it’s a good idea to use the city’s assets to bring in some money.
In other business:
• The council also awarded a bid for financing up to $316,000 to BB&T Governmental Finance to pay for vehicles and equipment.
The loan agreement is for 2.29 percent for a little less than five years.
• The council gave the OK to staff to apply for Main Street Solutions Fund, which is a state fund that provides economic development grants, for interested businesses. The grants require a $2 match for every $1 of grant money.
Glenn Pattishall, planning director and assistant city manager, told the council they will invite any interested businesses to apply. Applications are due Feb. 10, according to information from the city.
