The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's mini-losing streak has become a thing of the past.
The Bears took out their frustration on Brevard and blew away the Tornados 74-49 Wednesday night for their first win in three games.
"It was the first time in two years we'd lost two in a row," L-R head coach Todd Starkey said. "Our team was motivated to play tonight, no doubt about it.
"They were focused on making sure they turned that losing streak around."
L-R (14-6, 7-3 South Atlantic Conference) seized a 6-0 lead in the first one minute, 31 seconds and led 14-2 after Amber Holt made her fourth field goal, with only 3:11 elapsed.
"Our game plan was to be aggressive from the start," Starkey said. "In the last two games we were playing on our heels a little, instead of pressing.
"We dictated the pace of play for 40 minutes. I thought we did a good job of setting the tone early in both halves.
Brevard (7-13, 1-9) got as close as 23-15 -"They were hitting contested threes," Starkey said -before L-R regained command.
The Bears led 37-18 at halftime and scored the first eight points of the second half.
The highlight thereafter was a layup by Jami Safrit, giving her 1,001 career points, with 3:01 to play.
Safrit, a Fred T. Foard High graduate, became the 15th L-R woman to score 1,000.
Holt, who finished with 14 points, was the only player to reach double figures.
L-R's Denise Moore got all nine of her points in the first half, and Brittany Mitch and Jacquelyn Kremer also scored nine each for the Bears.
Samantha Winn, who was second in the SAC with a 19.1 average, led Brevard with nine points.
The victory moved the Bears into second place, one game behind Newberry, in the SAC race.
Newberry (15-5, 8-2) will visit L-R on Saturday night for a 6 p.m. tip off.
