'There is no danger of the soup kitchen closing'

Doors will stay open and work will continue despite setbacks

Despite recent setbacks, the Hickory Soup Kitchen is committed to keeping its doors open and continuing to serve its mission — feeding the hungry.

A snowstorm disrupted the soup kitchen's annual spaghetti dinner on Jan. 23.

"The weather didn't cooperate," said Soup Kitchen board member Beverly Barger. "We did sell a lot of advance tickets and we made up a lot of take-out meals."

After the meal, the soup kitchen's manager Sam Whitener had a stroke.

"He was still at the kitchen and people were with him," said Soup Kitchen board president Georgene Freeman.

He was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center, where he is recovering.

"He is doing a little better," Freeman said. "He is moving along."

Some people were alarmed to find the soup kitchen closed Monday. Barger said there's no need to worry.

"The kitchen was closed Monday because the schools were closed, but we were open Tuesday," Barger said.

Board members are taking turns managing the kitchen as Whitener recovers.

"There is no danger of the soup kitchen closing," said Freeman. "Its mission will stay the same — feeding the hungry."

Freeman said the kitchen's biggest fundraiser of the year will be Sunday.

It's called Souper Bowl of Caring.

Area youths will be standing beside church doors on Super Bowl Sunday with soup pots. They will be asking members to donate $1 each to feed the hungry. The proceeds will go to benefit area soup kitchens and food pantries.
