Bad weather sidelines high school athletes

Northwestern 3A-4A cancels conference wrestling tourxml_nament

All high school athletic events scheduled tonight and Saturday involving Catawba County Schools will not be played.

School system officials said poor weather conditions will sideline student-athletes until at least Monday.

Also, the second day of first round games in the Kermit Whisnant Memorial middle school basketball tournaments at Catawba Valley Community College are also postponed. Tournament officials have not yet indicated their plans for completing the tournaments, which still have four first round games to go, plus the semifinals and championship games.

In wrestling, the Northwestern 3A-4A decided about 11 a.m. today that it will not try to have its conference tournament on Saturday at Alexander Central. The tournament is cancelled, Alexander Central athletic director Tom Harper said.

The Catawba Valley Athletic 2A wrestling tournament is scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday at Bunker Hill. The league originally said it would have the tournament at 3 p.m. on Monday at Bunker Hill if Saturday's event was postponed. But with the Bunker Hill gym in use Monday for makeup games against West Caldwell, CVAC coaches are considering what they should do. A decision is expected late today.

The wrestling teams are pinned in a bit by having to prepare for the state dual-team tournaments that begin with two rounds on Tuesday. The other three rounds of those tournaments, including the state title matches, are also next week.
