The woman working to become the first female sheriff of Catawba County Sheriff was the first in line on the first day candidates were allowed to file for the November election.

Democrat and retired deputy Doris Kirby was waiting to file Monday morning when Republican and Chief Deputy Coy Reid of the Catawba County Sheriff's Office walked into the board of elections.

At noon, Larry Brewer called the candidates to the counter and they completed their filing paperwork and paid their $715 filing fees simultaneously.

Now that they're officially in the race for sheriff both candidates have a lot to get done.

"It's time to get to work,'' Kirby said. "I'm going to get my name out there and let people know I'm running.''

Reid said he's putting the finishing touches on his steering committee.

"It's going really well. I've got a lot of support,'' he said. "I've spent most of my life serving the citizens of this county and I want to continue doing it as sheriff.''

Catawba County Sheriff David Huffman is retiring this year but he had kind words to saw about the candidates who are competing to fill his position.

"They're both good people. I've known Coy and Doris most of their adult lives,'' he said. "It's good to see good people running for office. You don't see that much anymore.''
