A woman who fell asleep at the wheel on Sunday is lucky she wasn't ejected from her car, according to a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper.
Rebecca Copley, 19, of Henderson, was driving east on Interstate 40 near the N.C. 16 exit at about 4:30 p.m. when she dozed off, said Trooper J.M. Crouse. Copley ran off the road to the left, over-corrected and crossed both lanes of traffic, running off the right side of the road and hitting a guardrail, Crouse said. Her car did not overturn, but was on its side.
"She's very lucky she's alive," Crouse said, adding that if she wasn't wearing her seat belt, she probably "would have been thrown out."
She escaped the accident uninjured.
One lane of I-40 was closed for about an hour because of the accident. It was re-opened at about 5:30 p.m.
Copley, who was not speeding through the 65 mph zone, was cited for careless and reckless driving.
