Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jami Safrit has been named the South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
Safrit, a senior guard averaged 10.3 points, 5.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds in leading No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne (9-3, 2-0) to a 2-1 week.
The Fred T. Foard High graduate tallied 17 points, six assists and five rebounds in L-R's 77-71 win over No. 21 Lander Tuesday at the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic in Morrow, Ga., handing the Bearcats their first loss of the season.
Safrit concluded the week with a near triple-double (12 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds) in Lenoir-Rhyne's 75-60 victory against South Atlantic Conference-rival Tusculum at home Saturday.
Safrit is averaging 8.9 points per game this season, while handing out 33 assists in the 10 games she has played in.
She has connected on 42% of her shots from the floor and is shooting 77% from the free throw line.
Wingate University freshman forward Odell Turner was named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week.
Turner, a freshman from Charlotte averaged 15.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game while leading Wingate to an impressive 3-0 record on the week.
Turner had 18 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks while hitting six-of-nine shots from the field as Wingate overcame a 16-point second half deficit for a 73-66 win over GCSU.
