Democratic state Sen. Steve Goss will seek re-election to a third term.

The Boone resident and ordained minister serves the 45th Senate District that includes Alexander, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties.

"Our nation, state and our local communities are experiencing very difficult economic times," Goss said when he announced his decision Tuesday.

"There is no shortcut out of our present difficulties. Decisions we face from the nation's capital, the state house, to the courthouse and our neighborhoods are going to be difficult, will require hard choices and will often be painful. However, as we look ahead, the spirit of our people and good sense will prevail. I believe that my experience and knowledge of the counties and how Raleigh works can serve our region well."

Goss outlined his agenda for his next two-year term.

1. Provide person-to-person constituent service. He said he would continue to hold office hours and town hall meetings in local communities throughout the district.

2. Aggressively push for greater accountability throughout state government.

3. Support more aggressive enforcement of eligibility rules for various state programs. "The people expect fair and equitable treatment of all," he said.

4. Raise the ethical standards in government. Goss recently became chairman of the Legislative Ethics Committee. "I will demonstrate and demand that our regional values be upheld in Raleigh," he said.
Goss said he is working with the governor's office on a new law to tighten rules for ethical behavior in state government.

5. Work toward fair and equitable treatment of the region in all facets of state government. "My re-election will ensure that our days of stepchild treatment are over," he said.

In his second term, Goss is Senate chair of transportation appropriations, and Senate chair of the Joint Legislative Transportation Committee.
