Free fans spell relief for some

Temperatures have topped 90 degrees for 11 of the past 14 days and people are looking for relief.
Those in need can turn to area charities for help in the form of fans.
Box fans have been donated to the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry and Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry.
An anonymous donor brought nine fans to the Hickory location Wednesday and they went fast.
"We're trying to help people at risk in this heat," said the Hickory ministry's Executive Director Dr. Roger Baker.
He said the fans are given to people suffering from the heat because they are without air conditioning in their homes.
Many Hickory area residents are without air-conditioning and more fan donations would be welcome, Baker said.
A donor gave 10 new box fans to the Eastern Catawba location Wednesday and pledged to bring more, said Executive Director Rev. Robert Silber, in an e-mail.
Anyone wishing to donate a fan can call GHCCM at 327-0979 or ECCCM at 465-1702.
