Julia Rush, one of the most familiar and respected faces in downtown Hickory, is retiring. We wish her well.
When a lot of entrepreneurs gave up on downtown, Rush refused to budge.
Her shop, -julia rush- Fine Crafts, was among the first on Union Square to get a facade makeover.
Rush was willing to invest in downtown as a shopping destination, and her trust paid off.
She enjoyed considerable success and renown. She built a long list of loyal customers.
Now, the dynamic business leader has decided to close her familiar gallery.
She has many things to do, she said. We understand. Rush doesn't do anything halfway. From running a business, to extolling the virtues of downtown Hickory to singing (what a voice!), she puts every ounce of energy into everything she does.
The economy has not been kind to Hickory, and Rush has not been immune to the downturn.
Still, she made a go of it when others said downtown was a retail graveyard.
Rush has been an anchor for Union Square.
Now, sadly, but with gratitude and good wishes, she joins a list of business leaders who decided to go in a different direction.
We can only hope that whoever moves into her coveted spot has the verve and knowledge Rush has demonstrated during her 30 years in downtown Hickory.
We doubt her support for Hickory will wane and her vision for a strong center city will dim.
She will be missed on the square, but thank goodness she will remain among us to share her wit, wisdom and love of our city.
