The new Newton-Conover Middle School will cost about $16.8 million to build.
At the Newton-Conover City Schools' board of education meeting Tuesday night, members approved the $16,834,039 construction bid to the John S. Clark Company from Mt. Airy. That bid does not include the architecture fee. It also does not include the furniture for the school or the technology for the school.
The new school will be built at 873 Northern Drive in Conover, about two miles north of the current school. The design is based off the design used for the Northview and Grandview middle schools in the Hickory Public Schools system.
Newton-Conover City Schools has modified the design so its school will be a LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green school under the Green Building Rating System, and is aiming for platinum level, the highest level possible.
The John S. Clark Company is qualified to build a green school for the district, said Barry Redmond, superintendent for Newton-Conover City Schools.
"They have a LEED-certified person to manage that part," Redmond said.
Although the company has not built any green schools, Redmond said it has built LEED-certified buildings.
Redmond said he hopes prep work for the new middle school site will begin in May, and that the site will be contoured then. The construction company is expected to start laying the foundation for the school in August or September. The school is scheduled to open for the 2012-13 school year.
"We're very excited for the citizens of Newton-Conover City Schools," Redmond said. "We think the community's getting a good value. With 16 companies bidding, it kept the prices competitive."
