A personal experience inspired F. Wesley Sigmon to run for District Court judge.

He is challenging incumbent Judge L. Suzanne"San" Owsley in the 25th Judicial District.

He is an attorney with the law firm of Kennedy and Wulfhorst.

Sigmon's son was born with multiple heart defects. After numerous surgeries, the youngster received a heart transplant in 2009. He is doing well.

"From the amazing journey with my family, I have experienced and observed others dealing with difficult personal experiences," Sigmon said.

"This unique perspective allows me to better understand the concerns related to people who have to come to court, from victims of crimes to plaintiffs to children."

A desire to serve and return the support given to his family prompted Sigmon to run for District Court.

"I believe District Court is the court of the people ... the people simply want a fair venue to stand trial, voice their complaints or address their concerns," the Catawba County native said.

"As judge, I will work to expand the programs we have in place, such as the Drug Treatment Court, Infractions Court and Judges in School."

Sigmon said existing programs and innovative methods must be used to relieve the overburdened court system.

He is a graduate of Bandys High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and N.C. Central University School of Law.

He began his practice with Sigmon, Sigmon, and Isenhower. He has practiced residential and commercial law, corporate and business law, estates and probate, family law, civil litigation, criminal law and eminent domain/condemnation.

He lives in Terrell with wife Lyndsi and son Luke.

"I will strive for sentencing that equally punishes a defendant, but provides the necessary rehabilitation to reduce the risk of re-offenders," he said.
