CommScope said Thursday it will move cable-manufacturing jobs out of Newton to a Joliet, Ill., plant later this year. About 85 hourly and salaried employees will lose their jobs, said Bill Walter, a spokesman for the company.
About 45 people who work non-manufacturing jobs inside the Newton building will remain CommScope employees, Walter said.
Those include information technology, marketing and engineering employees.
Walter said the job loss is part of a company-restructuring plan expected to save between $3 and $4 million.
He is not sure what will happen to the 450,000-square-foot building at 1545 Saint James Church Road in Newton.
The majority of the jobs will move out of the plant between September and October. The company is making the announcement early to give people a chance to look for other work.
In Newton, manufacturing workers mostly make coaxial cable for the wireless market.
In CommScope's press release, an executive said the company is trying to protect its earning ability as customers spend less.
"These actions are difficult yet unavoidable, and we regret the impact on our employees," said Randy Crenshaw, executive vice president for CommScope. "We are in the midst of a comprehensive review of our global manufacturing footprint as we work to improve facility utilization, minimize cost and protect the profitability of our business in response to reduced — and more volatile — customer spending patterns."
