Had actor Corey Haim not died Wednesday, local actors had a chance to work with the '80s icon, said Hickory agent Beverly Brock.
Haim, known for teen classics such as "The Lost Boys" and "The Goonies," was under contract to star in "S.A.D (Standard American Diet)," a Mooresville-based film.
The online Internet Movie Database lists it as the last picture for which Haim was cast.
Brock is the casting director for the movie. She said she had local actors booked for auditions, although the producer was still trying to secure money for the movie.
Brock and "S.A.D" producer/director Tim Vogel of Lancer Entertainment Group in Mooresville got the news about Haim's death early Wednesday morning.
Vogel had told her last year he wanted to offer Haim the film's starring role.
Brock said she was skeptical at first, but understood from Haim's agent that the addiction-plagued actor was excited about getting his life back together.
In "S.A.D," he was to play a chemical engineer who uncovers a drug company plot to invent diseases the company can cure.
"S.A.D" was something (Haim) could relate to given his past experiences with drug abuse and the fact that his mother had/has cancer," said Vogel in an e-mail.
Brock said Haim's agent told her and Vogel that Haim was sick and taking medicine for the flu. That, combined with drugs to help him fight addiction, purportedly caused his death, Brock said.
In television interviews, Haim's mother told reporters he had water in his lungs and an enlarged heart.
