Hickory police said they responded to a shootout near Waffle House at 1227 13TH AVE. Drive, SE, early Sunday morning.

The person or people involved had left before police arrived, said Sgt. Robert George with the Hickory Police Department. He said authorities have no idea how many people were involved.

Responding a call around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, investigators found shell casings on the ground near Waffle House and a gun in an abandoned car. Sgt. George. would not say how many spent casings or what kinds of guns were involved. He said an investigation is pending.

Police found one bullet hole nearby in the downspout of a gutter at Hooters, George said.
As of Sunday afternoon, no injuries had been reported as a result of the gunplay. Police alerted area hospitals to be on the lookout.

The call came in from a person who heard shots, looked outside and saw people scattering, according to George. He said the person might have been staying at a nearby hotel.

Waffle House was open during the incident, but Hooters was closed.

Managers at both restaurants said they could not talk about the incident.

No arrests had been made and police had no suspects Sunday. Officers continued to investigate.
