Davidson's Fort plans two living history events for 2010

Davidson's Fort Historical Park in Old Fort has two special events lined up for 2010.

The park features a recreation of the frontier stockade that gave the town of Old Fort its name.

In the 1770s, Samuel Davidson purchased some land, which included the present site of Old Fort, consisting of 640 acres. A fort was built on a portion of this land, which was probably reinforced by the local militia raised to attack the Cherokee. This fort would play a vital role in the settlement of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Revolutionary War.

In recent years, the directors of Davidson's Fort Historical Park have been hard at work building a replica of the colonial stockade. It will feature exhibits and living history events. The park is located off Lackey Town Road near Janesville Products.

Two such events are planned for Davidson's Fort in 2010 a spring muster on May 22 and a fall muster on Nov. 27. Both events will feature historical interpreters and re-enactors depicting life during 1776 on the western frontier of North Carolina at the time of the Revolution, and will include period crafters and sutlers. A sutler is someone who makes and sells period correct uniforms, weapons and other authentic items used by re-enactors.

All participants are expected to wear period clothing and to demonstrate a craft or life skill to the public, and all are welcome to sell period-appropriate crafts and sutler wares to the public.

The fort is open every Saturday from April to November, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
