A man who fell asleep while driving hit a power pole and a building in Newton early Monday morning.
Evan Grey Matson, 20, was driving his Mitsubishi SUV on North Main Avenue at about 1:40 a.m. when he fell asleep and crossed the centerline in the road, hitting a power pole on the left side, said Rosemary Frye with the Newton Police Department.
Matson then crossed back to his side of the road and struck the B&B Used Goods building at the intersection of North Main Avenue and 11th Street.
Matson caused $5,000 worth of damage to the power pole, $1,200 worth of damage to the brick building and $6,000 worth of damage to his SUV, Frye said. He was going 45 mph in a 20 mph zone.
Matson, who was wearing his seatbelt, was cited for driving without due caution at a speed as to endanger persons and property, Frye said.
The Newton Public Works Department arrived at the wreck between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. to fix the power pole, swapping the broken one for a new one, said Doug Wesson with the department. They were there until about 7:30 a.m. Wesson said no one lost power because of the wreck.
