Most of the houses in Royal Heights Circle will get free water hookups, thanks to a state grant.
When the subdivision's community well became contaminated, the Catawba County commissioners got a Community Development Block Grant for $308,500 to build a waterline there.
The grant program is administered by the N.C. Department of Commerce.
"Every North Carolinian should have access to safe, clean drinking water," said Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco.
His office confirmed water supply grants totaling $1.4 million Wednesday. Earlier in the week, the Catawba County commissioners OK'd a plan to work with the Western Piedmont Council of Governments to push the project.
The subdivision is off Old Shelby Road near Advent Crossroads.
The water line will be part of the Hickory system under a revenue-sharing contract between the city and county.
Nineteen of the 22 households will be connected for free. The other three households exceed income limits and will be responsible for their hookups.
Qualifying households must have a total income less than 80 percent of the median family income for the area.
The 8-inch waterline will run 2,100 feet.
No date has been set for completion.
