Hickory police say 28 shell casings were found in Waffle House parking lot following an early Sunday morning shootout.

The shooting broke out at about 3:30 a.m. After the firing stopped, officers found 28 shell casings from three caliber guns scattered over a wide area from the Waffle House to the nearby Hooters on 13th Ave. Drive, SE.

Investigators are working to learn what sparked the shooting.

"We don't have any suspects that we can name at this time," said Capt. Gary Lee of the Hickory Police Department.

The Hickory Police Department's Street Crimes Interdiction Unit is working the case.

"At least three different semi-automatic handguns were involved," Lee said. "We don't know exactly how it went down."

Officers found a .40 caliber pistol in the Waffle House parking lot.

Police found one bullet hole nearby in the downspout of a gutter at Hooters, said Sgt. Robert George.

Waffle House was open during the incident, but Hooters was closed.

Anyone with information about the gunfire is asked to call the Hickory Police Department at 328-5551.
