St. Stephens High School will soon have a few more laptops and extra computer parts for the school, after an area business chose them for a prize worth $25,000.
The Hickory Best Buy was one of four regional winners in the U.S., along with a winner in Canada, which won a contest. As part of winning, the store could select an area school that would receive $25,000 worth of products from Intel, said DeAnna Taylor, principal at St. Stephens High School.
“They could have chosen any school, and they chose us,” she said. “We’re so thankful they did.”
Taylor said she is uncertain why the Hickory Best Buy chose St. Stephens High, but said she thinks the management team at the store gathered the staff together to see which school they wanted to select.
“We didn’t know anything about this until they called me,” Taylor said. “Talk about a dream come true. This type of thing just doesn’t happen in this economy.”
Because there were five schools that received the prize package, Intel put together a menu of items the schools could choose from, as long as the list didn’t exceed the $25,000 price tag. St. Stephens chose a few computer monitors, a desktop computer and more than a dozen laptops — enough to outfit at least a partial classroom — which can go from class to class on a cart, Taylor said.
“We have been blessed with technology, and were in very good shape to start with, but with the onslaught of online classes, we can never have too much (technology or computers),” she said.
She hopes the new equipment will arrive near the end of September.
“I thank the local Best Buy,” Taylor said. “It’s an awesome way to be a community role model.”
