After spending Thursday evaluating storm damage, meteorologists from the National Weather Service made an announcement Friday: A pair of tornadoes tore through Caldwell and Alexander counties early Thursday morning.
The path of destruction was obvious to experts and casual observers alike, but after studying the wreckage and taking copious notes, the scientists confirmed what many already suspected.
Both twisters were categorized as EF 1 strength storms with winds that reached 90 to 100 miles per hour.
Caldwell County’s tornado left behind a path of destruction 100 yards wide and 4½ miles long.
Alexander County’s tornado formed, dissipated and reformed over a 5-mile path that was 50-75 yards wide.
The tornado statistics were based on the level of destruction they left in their wake.
No one was seriously injured in the tornadoes.
