Alexander County's emergency responders are struggling to deal with the destruction caused by a storm that knocked out the county's 911 system.
"There are trees down all over the place," said Chief Deputy Tod Jones of the Alexander County Sheriff's Office. "We don't know if we've had a tornado come through or not."
Powerlines were reported down across Taylorsville Manufacturing Rd.
Catawba County's 911 operators stepped up to take Alexander County's 911 calls. Jones asked anyone who needs emergency help to call or go to their local fire department in an effort not to overwhelm the dispatchers.
The Alexander County's emergency workers set up a command post at the Taylorsville Fire Department.
In Catawba County, N.C. 10 was closed from Rosenwald School Street to Hudson Chapel Road because a large tree fell and was blocking the road.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Alexander and Catawba counties Thursday afternoon.
