Catawba Valley Community College is renaming its multipurpose athletic and event venue The Tarlton Complex in his honor James V. Tarlton Jr., who has given the largest single private gift in the college’s 53-year history.
The amount of the gift was not disclosed and it was given to the CVCC Foundation.
“I am supporting Catawba Valley Community College through this gift to the CVCC Foundation because I believe that our community college holds the solution to our economic situation,” said Tarlton, of Shook & Tarlton Real Estate. “I also feel that education provides people with opportunity and hope for their future. The training provided and the graduates are the backbone of our workforce. I hope this gift will influence others to support the college as I do.”
Tarlton joined the CVCC Foundation board in 1991 and has served on the executive committee, property committee and as vice chairman. During his tenure, the college acquired 37 acres including land where the East Campus and the Business & Industry Training Complex sits.
“Mr. Tarlton's many gifts of time, talent and treasure are priceless,” said CVCC President Garrett D. Hinshaw. “Incredible things are happening at CVCC with the support of champions like Jim. We are grateful for his generosity.” Hinshaw added that the gift was given without restricted purposes.
Tarlton’s recent gift is his second at a naming opportunity level. A second-floor classroom in the Tarlton Complex bears the name of Judith and James Tarlton, Jr.
