A Hudson woman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly purchasing large quantities of pseudoephedrine – the drug commonly found in over-the-counter sinus medications like Sudafed – for use in methamphetamine production.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office’s Inner-County Contra-drug Eradication Unit arrested Teresa Mae Miller, 46, after investigating a violation of pseudoephedrine purchasing limits. By law, pharmacies are required to obtain a valid identification of any person buying ephedrine-based products. The defendant’s name caught the attention of drug agents because it “appeared quite frequently in several of the pharmacy logs,” according to a media release issued by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
During the investigation, drug agents learned that Miller had been to several pharmacies in Caldwell County where she purchased 18 grams of ephedrine-based products over a three-month span.
State law says, “No person shall deliver to any one person, attempt to deliver to any one person, purchase, or attempt to purchase at retail more than two packages containing a combined total of more than 3.6 grams of any pseudoephedrine products per calendar day or purchase at retail more than three packages containing a combined total of more than 9 grams of pseudoephedrine products within any 30-day period,” according North Carolina General Statute.
The law does not apply to those with a valid prescription.
Miller was charged with pseudoephedrine transaction violations and jailed under a $7,500 secured bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 2.
