If you own property in Catawba County, you should receive your tax bill by the end of next week.
Catawba County Tax Office is mailing out 98,000 property tax bills this week and early next week. Tax bills are due Sept. 1 but bills won’t be considered delinquent until Jan. 5. Those that are delinquent will be charged a 2 percent penalty for the month of January and then three-quarters of 1 percent each month the bill remains unpaid, the information says.
But taxpayers have options to get the bill paid. Those who might have trouble coming up with the entire amount at one time can opt to make payments. Those who would like the option of payments have to contact the county tax office, said Mark Logan, county tax administrator.
In addition to making payments, you can pay your tax bill in person at the county tax office, by mail or online. If you choose to pay your bill online you will be charged a convenience fee that is assessed by the online vendor handling the transaction, Logan said. The convenience fee to use the option with most debit and credit cards is 2.45 percent of the total bill, he said. The fee for using a Visa debit card, though, is a $3.94 flat fee per transaction, and there is a $1.50 fee to pay by electronic check, he said.
To pay online, go to www.catawbacountync.gov/tax and click on the “Pay Taxes Online” link. You will need the abstract number that is on your tax bill. You also can do a search on the site to find your tax bill.
How much you owe will be in the middle part of your bill. The bill also will show the county tax rate — 53 cents per $100 of property value — and the rate for your town or city, if it applies, and fire district tax rate. Also on the bill will be the account number, abstract number and property identification number (PIN), location of the property and acreage information.
The county conducted a property revaluation for this year’s tax bills. The revaluation saw an overall 3.3 percent increase for residential properties, while industrial properties saw an overall 5 percent decrease, Logan said. With residential and industrial combined, properties in the county saw an overall increase of 1.9 percent, he said.
While residential properties increased, Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved a half-cent drop in the tax rate when it approved in June the county budget for 2011-12, going from 53.5 cents to 53 cents per $100 of property value.
