Two people have been arrested for thefts of boating equipment at a marina during the last two weeks and more charges are expected, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
Boyfriend and girlfriend Nicholas Paul Bowman and Cynthia Gail Proctor have been charged with stealing a boat motor from a marina along Lake Hickory, said Capt. Keith Warren with the sheriff’s office. He said the sheriff’s office initially received information about the theft of boat parts from Crime Stoppers.
“Once we got the Crime Stoppers report, we contacted the marina and they told us some owners had reported items stolen,” Warren said. “We found out where they were selling (boat) batteries and the boat motor they stole. When we got those items back we charged them.”
Bowman, 33, of Hickory, is charged with three counts of misdemeanor larceny for the theft of boat batteries and one count of felony larceny for a boat motor. Proctor, 48, of Hickory, is charged with one count of felony larceny for the motor.
Warren said the batteries, which are worth about $100 each, were sold in the Hickory area and the motor, valued at $7,000, was sold in Burke County. More charges are expected for the sale of additional batteries. Warren said other suspects are also involved. He said Bowman and Proctor are also suspected in other thefts.
Bowman was arrested June 10, and has since bonded out of jail. Proctor was arrested June 27 and was jailed on a $5,000 secured bond.
